December 11, 2024, Semarang Through the “Occasus” team, the English Department students at Universitas Dian Nuswantoro (Udinus) Semarang successfully carried out a creative campaign to advertise Tirang Beach. The campaign was conducted twice: on Sunday, December 8, 2024, at the Car Free Day (CFD) location in Simpang Lima Semarang, and on December 11, 2024, at the Udinus campus area.
This project is part of the Public Relations course for Udinus’ fifth-semester English Department students. Under the alias “Occasus,” the students worked to promote Tirang Beach as a travel destination that promotes environmental preservation in addition to providing natural beauty. The Occasus team started a campaign called “Let’s Hit Tirang Beach!” with the goal of increasing Tirang Beach’s appeal while promoting environmental sustainability in order to present one of Semarang’s hidden gem tourist spots. This campaign is done in order to encourage the community—especially the younger generation—to visit Tirang Beach. The campaign supports government efforts to promote local tourism and increase public understanding of the value of protecting the environment.
Sariya Baita Rahma, Avicenia Nasywa K, Rico Johan Pramudia, Mervyn Wibisono, Fadli Andryanto P, Gunawan, Fransiscus Joseph Izhak Da Costa, and Refa Aprilia A.D. were the eight students who participated in this campaign. They enthusiastically promoted the campaign as part of the “Occasus Team,” even asking people to share their memories regarding Tirang Beach.
According to Joseph Da Costa, the campaign’s head coordinator, the goal is to increase public knowledge of Pantai Tirang’s potential as a beach destination in alongside Pantai Marina. “Pantai Tirang is a hidden gem with beauty that is not well known. We hope that this campaign will educate everyone about Pantai Tirang, particularly the younger generation.”
In order to accomplish this, the Occasus team planned a number of entertaining events at CFD Simpang Lima Semarang, including interactive games and introductions to learn more about Pantai Tirang. The Occasus team also used their Instagram account, @occasus_team, to host tournaments. “We hope that through these activities, the community, especially young people, will be interested in visiting Pantai Tirang and participating in its conservation efforts,” Fransiscus said. In addition to increasing tourism, this initiative hopes to boost the local economy, especially for small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) in the Pantai Tirang area.
Mayang was one the visitors who gave the campaign positive feedback, saying, “There are a lot of exciting games and prizes, and the campaign is so much fun.” I now know that Semarang is home to a stunning beach called Pantai Tirang. I appreciate the highly valuable information.”
The Occasus team’s plan was also commended by Retno, the Head of the English Language Student Association (HMBI) at Udinus. Semarang people can be more willing to appreciate the richness of our beach tourism thanks to the “Let’s Hit Tirang Beach” campaign. This shows Semarang’s various beach tourism alternatives.
The Head of the English Department, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Dr. Sunardi, S.S., M.Pd., stated that through the Public Relations course, students are taught the concept of good public relations and how to apply their language skills in both digital and conventional communication about current societal issues. “This time, they are working on a project focusing on communication and promotion of cultural heritage and tourist attractions in Semarang City, as well as their contribution to Semarang’s vision as a city of cultural conservation and a tourist destination,” he added.
In addition to increasing tourism to Pantai Tirang, the Occasus team hopes that this campaign would boost the local economy, especially for small and businesses near the beach. Pantai Tirang is anticipated to become known as a popular tourist site that provides natural beauty and informs tourists about the value of environmental preservation with the help of the local community.
